Plum is a free service that helps you share and stay connected with groups of people in your everyday life.
With Plum you can quickly and easily do the following:
Plum is for anyone who wants to stay connected and share in a more private way than is currently possible on big social networks like Facebook. With Plum you can set up social groups for close friends, your family, roommates, co-workers, your church, your basketball league, school…
Set up a group network for seven people or seventy. You're in control.
We're big fans of Facebook. It is a wonderful service for staying in touch with and broadcasting to large number of "friends" — people you may know.
Yet, in real-life we all belong to many different social groups — family, school, work, sports team, church and so forth. Plum lets you set up or join different groups for different people and interests in your life. We are not suggesting you stop using Facebook. But we are asking that you try us out for groups of friends or family where you may not want everything you post and say to be visible to all your friends.
A social group is a small social network of people you care about and want to stay in touch with, or simply share some interests with.
Making a group is very simple. Go to www.plum.com and enter a name for your group. Then click the "Create" button. Sign up (or sign in if you are already a registered Plum). Pick a web address for your group, for instance yourfamilyname.plum.com, select whether your group should be private or public, pick a color theme and you are good to go.
Go to www.plum.com and sign in. All groups you have created or are a member will available now on www.plum.com. Additionally, in the upper left of every web page, you will see a "My Groups" menu. Move your mouse over this menu and select the group you want to visit. To return to the on page list of your groups, click on the link 'My Groups.'
When you are signed-in to a group, click the "Invite People" link. Pick names from your Yahoo! or Google email address book (more coming soon). You can also send invitations to specific people to join your group.
Now start posting. When your friends join, they will get involved if they see there is fun, funny, and useful stuff already going on in the group.
When you make a Plum group you are asked whether you want the group to be public or private. A private group is only accessible for people that have been invited. A public group can be joined by anyone. See below for more on private and public groups.
Privacy settings determine who can see and join your group. You determine whether a group is Public or Private when you create it. You cannot change this setting after the group has been created.
Public means that anyone can join your group. Items that are posted to the group are by default public. People outside the group can see all public items posted to a public group.
Private means that only people who are invited by you or other group members can join the group. In a private group nobody on the outside can see what's in the group. Within a private group you can post items for everybody in the group to see, "For your eyes only" or you can post items only with a select group of people in the group.
You can always post things "For your eyes only" or share with a select group of people in a group. You can also set up a folder, make it private and invite only a select few to the folder. Anything you post to that folder is then only visible to the people you have invited.
Group Settings are preferences that only apply to this particular group. For example, setting your home page is a group setting. Other settings, such as your password, apply throughout Plum and across all groups. These other settings can be found at Plum.com
Both are settings related to when you get an email. Email alerts are sent when somone in a group comments on something you posted or directs a post specifically at you. It's recommended to keep these on, as they are for each group by default. Group Activity Emails are sent whenever anyone in the group posts something new.
Sign in and visit www.plum.com. Then, click "Change Photo". Within a group, you can also click on your photo icon on the 'edit profile' link. Your profile photo/icon is the same for every group you might join or create.
In Public groups you can have "friends" just like in a social network. In order to become friends with someone you must send them an invitation (or accept one they send you). If they accept your invitation, you can keep track of the items they share and their comments in your "Friends" tab on the top of your group page.
You can invite your family, co-workers and others to be friends in a public group via email. You can also invite existing members by entering their username.
You decide. Whenever you post something, you can choose whether to keep it just to yourself, share it with certain friends or with everyone. (See privacy settings above for more information about the difference between private and public groups.)
A status update is a short text update that gets posted to everyone in a group. It is a quick way to let everybody know what you are doing, share a thought or ask a question. People can post a comment on your status update to give you feedback or answer questions.
Once signed-in, click the "Me" tab. You then post a status update by clicking in the box that says "What's new?" on the top of your groups page and typing your update. Click the "Post" button and you have posted your status update.
You add one of the little funny faces or icons to your status update by clicking on the little circle and triangle in the box to the left of the gray text that says "What's new?". A menu will pop down letting you pick the icon you want for your post. It even suggests some status updates you may want to make.
A note is just an easy-to-share way to jot a quick thought or idea. Writing a note is easy. Once signed-in, click the "Me" tab, click the notepad icon, and start typing.
You supplied an email address when you signed-up, but have not clicked on the confirmation link sent to that email address. Email confirmation protects the identity of users and preserves the intergrity of groups. It only takes a second, so please click on the link sent to your email address. If you have not recieved a confirmation email, make sure you're checking the proper email account and review your spam filter.
Once signed-in, click the "Me" tab, click the video icon, and upload a video or paste the embed code from YouTube (or other video site).
Once signed-in, click the "Me" tab, click the image icon, and upload your image.
Once signed-in, click the "Me" tab, click the document icon, and upload your document. Plum currently supports Microsoft Office and PDF documents.
Once signed-in, click the "Me" tab, click the link icon, and paste any link.
You cannot currently change your email address but we are working on giving you this capability.
In the meantime, you can sign-up with for a different username with a different email address.
Go to the sign-in page and click "Forgot your password?"; we'll email you to verify your identity and provide easy instructions
Like a folder on your computer, a folder is an area where you post similar items. To view your folders, sign in, click on the "Me" tab and click on "My Folders". You can view your folders here as well as make new ones by clicking the "New Folder" button.
When you create a folder you name it and decide whether it is public or private. You can invite others to contribute items to the folder, whether it's public or private, or keep it as yours alone. Use folders to organize events, lists, themes, or anything else you want.
To post something to a folder, say a photo, go to the top of your "Me" tab, click the "Photo" link (or use the browser tools), choose a photo, then click the "More options" link in the lower left and pick the folder you want to post the photo to. You will be able to see whether the folder is public or private.
A folder's creator has complete control over the folder; she can delete any item, and can add and remove contributors. A contributor can edit, save and delete items.
Find the item you want to delete by looking in your feed, going to the folder where you posted it or by using search. Click on the item title. Click the delete link at the top of the item and confirm that you want to delete it.
You can only delete items or comments that you have posted.
A feed, sometimes called "activity feed", is a running list of status updates, items and comments posted by you and other group members. When you sign in, Plum automatically populates your feeds with information posted by you and other group members. The more friends you have or the more people in your group, the more interesting your feed is likely to become.
Plum has multiple activity feeds as a way for you to easily get to the activity that matters most to you. Each main tab in the group has an associated activity feed. These are:
Comments on an item have the same privacy setting as the item itself. For instance, if an item is public, then a comment on that item can be seen by everyone as well. If an item is posted to you only, then your comment on the item is only visible to you and the person who posted the item. The bottom line: if an item is private (or in a private folder), then comments are private.
Private comments in a feed have a red background. Public comments have a green background.
Browser tools are handy buttons you add to your browser to make it easier to share web pages, videos and photos you like from any website.
Browser tools include:
Twitter is a service that lets people post short messages about what they're doing.
If you have a Twitter account, Plum can automatically post a message to Twitter when you post public items in public groups. This is a quick and easy way to let your Twitter followers stay up to date about your (public) posts in your group(s).
